HSM Health & Safety
Manager of the Year Award 2019
This category recognises a health and safety manager who has made a significant
contribution to the implementation or enhancement of health, safety or well-being
standards in either their own or a client organisation.
Adam Bracken – Winvic Construction Ltd
Few H&S managers could care for 700 operatives
across a 700-acre site while also negotiating airport
and motorway works, as well as utility-diversion risks.
Even fewer could produce a perfect RIDDOR record.
Or consider modernising the industry's view on
inclusive subcontractor training. Winvic's Adrian
Bracken did all of this, and more.
Jane Downey – Travis Perkins
Jane’s genuine empathy with others, her ability to
communicate with passion to colleagues and
stakeholders in a way that instantly brings them on
board, and her determination and resilience in her
continual quest to improve health and safety culture
make Jane a shining star in the field.
John Jebson – McGinley Support Services
John has worked his way to director level from the
ground up. He has risen through the ranks of health
and safety roles, and still keeps in touch with the front
line, truly understanding how to demonstrate health,
safety and well-being excellence. McGinley Support
Services says John embodies everything the
company strives to be.
Gillian Farrell – CAN Group
Gillian is the constant driving force behind health and
safety at CAN and is passionate about protecting the
workforce. She has a pragmatic approach that
involves the employees, whom she knows well. She
never loses sight of the personal element of her role,
which is just one of the things that has generated
great respect for Gillian among her colleagues.
Adam Gomes – Eco Air Control Limited
Adam is extremely passionate about health and safety.
He uses his free time to volunteer as a health and
safety governor at a local primary school and provides
free coaching to the next generation of young safety
professionals, helping guide them and get them a
foothold in the industry.
Donald Macfarlane – Downhole Products Limited
Donald is passionate about health, safety, well-being
and environmental concerns. He goes way beyond his
day job to help others develop and succeed while
keeping up with his own continuing professional
development. Donald is a chartered member of IOSH
and a member of the Institution’s Offshore Group.
Mathew Raju – One Holding Ltd
Matthew is highly focused on supporting and
protecting staff and premises. He always has a positive
attitude, even during tough times, and demonstrates
excellent motivation, creativity and innovation.
Clive Werrett – Worcestershire County Council
With more than 25 years of experience, Dr Clive
Werrett is a health and safety expert and industry
thought-leader. He consistently looks for new ways to
improve health and safety at Worcestershire County
Council, engage employees in health and safety
activities, and strengthen safety culture.
David Whitehouse – Virgin Trains
David has consistently demonstrated a commitment
to providing a safe rail environment for more than 13
years. He believes in implementing a strong safety
culture to protect both staff and the public. His
introduction of Pinnacle Response PR6 bodycams for
all front-line staff has helped reduce the number of
assaults on staff by almost half.
Brian Youl – Fox Industrial Services Ltd
Brian changed Fox Industrial Services Ltd’s whole
concept of operational health and safety, and his
approach is still going strong. He is highly committed
both to his role and to the company.
